|
Steve devoted his career to developing better ways of accessing and using information. Early on, he created award-winning instructional software that helped children who had reading problems. He also served on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science for more than 15 years. He held a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology and published more than 50 papers related to visualization and user-interface technology. At CMU, he directed the SAGE Group, which performed groundbreaking research on visualization and intelligent user interfaces. SAGE designed an expert system that automatically designs visualizations and user interfaces based on the characteristics of data, user sketches, graphical examples, and user preferences. Much of that pioneering work has informed the visualization technology behind the products Viz is developing today. Steve unexpectedly slipped away from us, his family, and his friends when he died in his sleep one summer night in 2005. For Viz, Steve's absence is mostly physical. His presence here continues on as we develop the technology and products that fulfill his vision for transforming the way people interact with information and the way people use information to interact. |
